CNC (Computer numerical control), systems are computer controlled machine tool used in manufacturing. The most common errors are user errors and lack of maintenance. The 3 most common CNC machine errors include the following:
User Error / Lack of Maintenance / Overheating
Much like any machine CNC machines are prone to overheating, while it may not sound like a big problem, it will require repair. A CNC machine starts to overheat at 150 degrees Fahrenheit. If your machine (which most are due to simple everyday use) is clogged with dust, dirt, or any type of debris the filters become clogged. A clogged filter will cause overheating and increase the temperature inside the machine, which could lead to even bigger repairs.
Once the machine overheats, it will need to be shut down and allowed to cool down then the filter will be removed and replaced. If any debris is left behind that will also need to be removed. The best way to prevent overheating is to have regular maintenance done.
Chattering CMC Machine
If your machine starts to chatter (vibrates) while in use – this chatter can occur in the machines tool or the entire machine. Chattering severely reduce the life of the tool and the quality of the work.
To prevent chattering cut both the depth and width refraction to 1/1000th of an inch. The CNC machinists usually also find that by slowing the machine down the chattering will stop. Some machinist prefers to speed them up and try out different RPMs to solve the problem. Either way both solutions work, it is up to the machinist to do what they feel comfortable doing to repair the problem.
Damaged Edges
The third and final common CNC machine problem that requires repair is if the machine is burning the edges of your work. This usually means your tool is damaged and needs to be repaired or replaced or you are using the tool at too low of a speed.
If this happens replace the tool with a sharper one and it should fix the problem.
